Leave-taking

Even as she slips,

rung by rung,

into the lower reaches

where only shades can follow,

you feel a tremor in the chest

that signals your farewell.

No sonorous words to see this through,

adjectives that traipse along,

comforters to soothe the pain

that’s partly hers and partly yours.

Grief can be a solitary calling.

Once

Once Pelion

with its chestnut trees and oregano fields,

centaur tales and mule-paths winding to the sea

inspired a creative spurt.

The muse was hers,

if not the words,

and more than all the riches of the earth

this was her faithful dowry,

sustaining you through troubled times.

Now our ties are in reverse,

for you must sustain her

through the disjointed days

of her decline.

No muse from the magic mountain

to whisper lines,

no happy endings or enchanted climes,

only the muffled notes

of parting.
